Why UK Employers Need Translated and Recognised Qualifications

What Is UK ENIC (Formerly UK NARIC)?
If you’ve been researching qualification recognition in the UK, you may have come across both “UK ENIC” and “UK NARIC” — they’re the same organisation. UK NARIC was rebranded to UK ENIC in 2021, and it’s managed by Ecctis on behalf of the UK government.
UK ENIC is the official national agency responsible for recognising and comparing international qualifications against UK standards. When you apply through UK ENIC, you receive a Statement of Comparability — an official document that sets out what your overseas qualification is equivalent to in the UK education system.
This statement is widely accepted by:

How to Translate Foreign Qualifications for UK Job Applications
1. Identify All Documents That Need Translation
Before you start, collect all the qualification documents you’ll be submitting. These typically include:
- Degree certificate (the formal award document)
- Academic transcript (showing modules studied, grades, and credits)
- Professional diplomas or vocational certificates
- Any supplementary qualification documents (honours classifications, specialist endorsements)

4. Apply for a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability
Submit your original qualification documents, certified translations, and the application fee to UK ENIC through their online portal. Standard processing takes 15 working days. Once approved, your Statement of Comparability sets out the UK equivalent level of your qualification — for example, whether your overseas degree is comparable to a UK Bachelor’s degree at Level 6, a Master’s degree at Level 7, and so on.
5. Submit to Employers or Professional Bodies
Once you have your certified translations and Statement of Comparability, you can include these with your job applications, professional registration applications, or visa applications as required. Always submit both the original documents and the certified translations together — never translations alone.
Regulated Professions: Additional Requirements
For many regulated professions in the UK, translation and UK ENIC recognition are just the starting point. Each profession has its own additional requirements:
Healthcare — Doctors (GMC)
Overseas doctors must register with the General Medical Council, which involves demonstrating that their primary medical qualification is acceptable and, in many cases, passing the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) test. Healthcare — Nurses and Midwives (NMC)

What Makes a Valid Certified Translation of a Foreign Qualification?

Complete Translation
Every element of the original document must be translated — the name of the awarding institution, the full title of the qualification, the date of award, grades or classifications, any distinctions or honours, official stamps, and the signatures of university officers.
Certification Statement
The translation must include a signed statement from the translator or translation company confirming that the translation is an accurate and complete representation of the original document.
Translator Credentials and Contact Details
Full name, signature, contact information, and date must be provided, making the translator identifiable and traceable.
Submitted With the Original
Certified translations must always be submitted alongside the original foreign-language document. A translation alone — even a perfect one — won’t be accepted.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Submitting Only the Translation Without the Original
UK ENIC and most professional bodies require both. A translation on its own won’t be accepted.
Using Uncertified or Informal Translations
Having a bilingual friend or colleague translate your degree certificate might seem like an easy shortcut, but UK ENIC and regulated professional bodies won’t accept it. The translation has to come from a qualified professional with proper certification.
Not Checking Whether Apostille Is Required

Not every UK employer requires a formal UK ENIC statement.
