Interpreters in Derby and Derbyshire

LITS has supplied interpreters to courts, hospitals and councils for over 20 years, in more than 300 languages. We know that when you book an interpreter, what matters is the appointment, not the arrangements behind it, so we take care of those for you. Before the day, you'll know who your interpreter is, and they'll already have the venue, the time and the kind of appointment from your booking. Whether it's a hearing on Morledge or an assessment at Kingsway, your interpreter arrives knowing what the job is, and you can give the appointment your full attention.

Book an interpreter to attend in person anywhere in Derby or Derbyshire, or by telephone or video. Send your enquiry any time between 9am and midnight, seven days a week, and you will have a quote back generally within the hour.

Interpreters trusted in the Royal Courts of Justice

Our interpreters regularly work in UK courts and tribunals, from the Royal Courts of Justice in London and the District Registry of the High Court in Manchester to the courts in Derby. We work with NRPSI-registered interpreters, and LITS is an ATC Accredited Member – background checked by the Association of Translation Companies and bound by its Code of Professional Conduct.

Our interpreters hold enhanced DBS certification, and where an assignment requires it, Home Office Counter Terrorist Check or police vetting to NPPV3.

Feedback on our Romanian interpreting service

"I would like to congratulate the interpreter on a fantastic job. He translated a client hearing live for my client in Romania. He was extremely professional throughout and I will be certainly instructing him again vie LITS."

Book an interpreter in Derby in three steps

  1. Tell us about the appointment. The language, the date, start time and how long it runs, the full venue address and what kind of appointment it is. Say whether the case is Legal Aid funded, and whether you need the interpreter in person, by telephone or by video.

  2. We send you a quote. Quotes generally within the hour, 9am-midnight, 7 days a week.

  3. We make the arrangements. You’ll know your interpreter’s name before the day, and we pass everything from your booking on to them before the assignment, so there’s nothing you need to explain to them yourself.

An interpreter attends your Derby or Derbyshire venue.

You set up the Teams or Zoom meeting and send us the link.
Booked through the same form.

If the interpreter booked for your assignment can’t come, we arrange another. And if your client has worked with one of our interpreters before, ask for them by name: for many languages we work with the same interpreters under standing arrangements.

Interpreters for Derby's courts, on Morledge and St Mary's Gate

Derby Combined Court Centre on Morledge hears Crown, county and family cases under one roof, so the address alone doesn’t tell an interpreter what they’re walking into. We pass on the type of hearing with the venue, and your interpreter has both before attending.

Derby Magistrates’ Court and the Social Security and Child Support Tribunal are on St Mary’s Gate. Some cases involving Derby clients are heard elsewhere: Nottingham Justice Centre handles employment claims, and Birmingham is one of the venues for immigration and asylum appeals. Book from the venue and attendance arrangements on the hearing notice, remote hearings included, and we send the interpreter to the right place in the right form.

We supply qualified interpreters, NRPSI-registered or members of ITI, for hearings where your side arranges the interpreter, meetings with counsel and witness statements. Tribunals work the other way, whether the benefits tribunal on St Mary’s Gate or employment and immigration hearings elsewhere: you ask the tribunal itself for the hearing interpreter, and a benefit appeal doesn’t permit your own during it, so ours covers the meetings and statements before the hearing. If you’re not sure whether the court or your side arranges the interpreter, our guide to booking a court interpreter covers who is responsible.

Interpreters for Royal Derby Hospital and Kingsway

An appointment at the Radbourne Unit is on the Royal Derby Hospital site on Uttoxeter Road, but Radbourne is run by Derbyshire Healthcare, not the trust behind Royal Derby’s acute services, and Kingsway Hospital is a separate site again. A trust name alone doesn’t get an interpreter to the right reception, and an interpreter at the wrong one leaves a clinician waiting and a patient with no way to explain what’s wrong. So we take the hospital, unit and full address from your appointment letter and send them to the interpreter before the day. You don’t have to explain Derby’s hospital sites to anyone: the details are already with the person attending.

Whether it’s an outpatient consultation or a mental health assessment, in person or over video, in a spoken language or in BSL, your interpreter goes in with the same details, passed on the same way.

Feedback on our Latvian interpreting service

"The interpreter built up excellent rapport with a difficult client. Friendly nature-perfect for mental health and was able to explain everything in a way the client could understand."

British Sign Language interpreters, booked like any other language

Derby is home to the Royal School for the Deaf Derby, which teaches in BSL and English, and 447 residents gave British Sign Language as their main language at the 2021 census. BSL isn't a special request here, and we don't treat it as one. We supply BSL interpreters for school meetings, hospital appointments, hearings and council appointments, through the same form and with the same details passed on before the day.

Support through asylum casework and police interviews

We arrange Kurdish, Arabic, Pashto and Farsi interpreters for asylum casework, solicitor appointments and the health and school meetings that go with them. Home Office reporting for the East Midlands is listed at Loughborough, not Derby, so we book to the address on your notice rather than assume the city.

A police interview is a separate booking. Derbyshire Constabulary’s St Mary’s Wharf custody suite is in Chester Green, not to be confused with the magistrates’ court on St Mary’s Gate. For a PACE interview there, the interpreter has the nature of the assignment and the custody address before attending, with police vetting to NPPV3 where the assignment requires it.
